To counter declining profits, Air Products will implement a global cost reduction plan to reduce capacity and costs. "First, we have shut down or will divest several underutilized facilities within our gases and chemicals segments," says chairman and CEO John P. Jones. "Second, we are implementing cost reductions to improve productivity, including balancing engineering resources with project activity. And third, we are reducing the number of management positions in the company to streamline our structure. Collectively, these actions will result in the elimination of 461 positions worldwide." The program is aimed at saving $38 million in fiscal 2004.As part of the restructuring, Air Products will shut down two liquid oxygen/liquid nitrogen plants at undisclosed locations. The company is also actively seeking a buyer for its $65 million to $70 million European methylamines business and is setting up its US methylamines business for divesture, having already closed its methanol and ammonia plant in Pensacola, Fla., notes Bane of America Securities analyst Mark Gulley. The CPU system features a signal line from the pump load sense controller through the power core of the valve stack to tank that is drained until a function is activated (a spool is moved). When a lift, telescoping, tilt or auxiliary spool is moved, the signal line is blocked, the pressure builds and the pump goes to its compensated setting. This signal channel is supplied with oil though a 0.035 in. orifice which connects the power core to the open center passage.Individual spools meter the required flow and pressure to the function. The pump delivers the required flow at the pump compensator pressure setting. The pump is at standby (unloaded at approximately 350 psi) when all functions are in neutral. The CPU system makes it easier to start the engine and prevents "ghost" movements when the functions are in neutral. A series of accidents involving air-powered nail guns last summer brought home the fact that the productive and powerful tools are also highly dangerous and need to be handled with respect. In the most tragic case, a framing nail punctured the heart of carpenter Camillo Juandelos on a minicarheaters home construction site in Ocean View, Md., in July, ending the man''s life at the age of 25. Police said Camillo''s brother Jesus was holding the gun that fired the deadly nail.According to reports in the Delaware News-Journal, the accident took place as the two men were framing new homes in a development in Ocean View. Jesus had been bending over a stud wall using the air nailer, and then straightened up and turned to call his brother. But Camillo was not on the other side of the room as Jesus thought; he was already standing right behind his brother. Camillo made contact with the nose of the nail gun, triggering the bump-nail mechanism and taking the nail in his chest.
