Dirt in the fuel is like sandpaper, and it will definitely cause greater wear."To meet the challenge, Cat''s newest engines are equipped with increased water-sensing and fuel-filtering capabilities as well as a filter on the fuel tank breather. Primary fuel filters, once designed to remove 150-micron particles, are now rated for 10 microns. Secondary filters, once sized to remove 10-micron particles, instantheatautocarheaterdefrostplugin are now rated for 2 microns. And the new high-efficiency filters can remove up to 99% of particles above those rated sizes compared to the 50% efficiency of older nominal filters. Filter improvements are also available for storage tanks. "Tank filters are typically rated at 10 microns nominal, so they take out 50% of particles greater than 10 microns in size. Tank filters with higher efficiencies, ratings down to 2 microns and water-absorbing capabilities, are now available," says Gall. "Fuel filters on the tractors are removing 90% of these particles, but in Texas there are nearly 3 million in the 2- to 5-micron size compared to about 100,000 in Iowa. Even with only 10% of the particles getting by, there are still plenty of contaminants to cause problems," he says.Clampitt''s study shows that drier conditions in Texas contribute to more dust in storage tanks. However, he says he''s found more problems with the portable tanks used to transfer fuel to the field."Most farmers with injector problems use pickup tanks or tanks mounted on trailers to take fuel to the field. The fuel in these tanks is usually agitated, so contaminants are in suspension. The tanks often don''t have a filter because the operator doesn''t want to slow fueling capacity. They often don''t have a proper vent cap and the fuel nozzle isn''t shielded from road dust," he says. Petroleum storage is the greatest environmental risk on most farms
