Fuel Injector Nozzles -- Injector nozzles contain a chamber that fills with fuel. When the chamber is full, pressure increases rapidly. The high pressure pushes against a piston that pushes against a spring. When the fuel pressure electric exceeds the spring pressure, the spring starts to collapse. As the spring collapses, the piston moves up, uncovering either a single or a multitude of holes. The fuel rushes out the holes into block the combustion chamber or pre-combustion chamber. When all the fuel has left the injector nozzle, the spring pushes the piston back on its seat, tightly sealing the nozzle.

I''d like to begin the new year with a discussion of the basics of a diesel fuel system with an in-line pump and follow up in February with the distributor type pump system. As you know, all diesel systems have a fuel tank, heater one fuel filter (possibly more depending on the installation), a transfer pump, a high-pressure fuel-injection pump, high pressure fuel lines, low-pressure fuel lines, injector nozzles, and sometimes return (fuel overflow) lines. Figure 1 represents a typical diesel fuel system.
