The introduction of stricter exhaust and noise emission standards along with the related increase in sophistication of equipment, both mobile and stationary, has created many challenges and opportunities for OEM equipment, engine and component manufacturers. And one component that has gained importance in all of this has been engine exhaust insulation blankets.Firwin Corp., a North York, Ontario, Canada, company is a manufacturer of custom removable insulation blankets for engine exhaust systems, as well as other heat shield insulation products. These products are used in a variety of applications, including standby and prime power generation, marine, on-highway, auto mining, construction, forestry, locomotive and military. Welding-site conditions and welding-wire diameter govern efficiency and size of power supply required for a job. Select a 100-A unit that runs from single-phase heater 115-V input for low-duty-cycle welding of sheet to l/s in. thick, feeding wire to 0.030-in. diameter. Medium-duty power supplies, 150-200 A, normally take single-phase 220-V input to weld steel to 3/16, in. and 0.035-in. wire at low-duty cycles. For high-duty cycles, as in mechanized welding, select a 250-A machine, single or three-phase input at various voltages-these weld material to 1/2 in. thick with wire as large as 0.045-in. diameter. Taking three-phase input only and wire up to 1/6-in. diameter, 400-A units serve for mechanized continuous-welding applications. For pulsed GMAW, shops use inverter and transistor power sources, constant-current or constant-voltage, that offer independent setting of pulse parameters. They employ synergic controls preprogrammed for a range of wire-feed speeds-the operator sets only one dial, for average current. Speaking of running pipe underground, TracPipe PS from Omegaflex provides an excellent way of running flexible stainless-steel gas pipe underground without having to install conduit. The familiar pipe can now be purchased pre-sleeved in 100-ft. lengths with shrink cuffs. In past articles I have written about the benefits of using flexible gas pipe, and this easy new underground protection system makes it look just that much more attractive.Many new thermostats were on display at the show, but not many new features. However, I did find one with a relatively interesting new twist -- it can be connected to a nondedicated telephone line for remote access. The TeleTemp 2000 from Telenetic Controls is much like most other digital residential setback models. It has a liquid-crystal readout of time and temperature with standard up and down pushbuttons, and hidden doors on either end cover the programming buttons. But plug in a telephone line and you can switch the system in and out of setback from a distant telephone.
